A mining and processing plant is one of the toughest environments for vibrating equipment: abrasive ore, continuous duty, a wide temperature range, and units spread far apart. A feeder that performs well on a light bulk material may not survive a season at a mining plant without accounting for this. Abrasive tray wear
Ore and concentrate are abrasive, and the feeder tray works as a wear part of the unit. On sizes running constantly on ore, reinforced tray lining and a more frequent inspection schedule for sheet thickness are worth the cost compared to feeders on non-abrasive materials (medium-hardness crushed stone, grain). Replacing the lining on a schedule, before wear breaks through, is cheaper than an unplanned stop on the processing line.
Full-hopper duty — the norm, not the exception
At a mining plant, the hopper ahead of the feeder is almost always kept well filled, and the feeder regularly starts under a column of material — an electromagnetic drive handles this with no issue, effectively acting as a hopper gate, while drives with rotating parts wear faster in this duty. Sizing for a specific hopper needs its own input data — chute angle, lump size, ore bulk density — covered in our article on sizing a feeder under a hopper.
Dust and explosion safety
Fine ore and concentrate fractions generate dust during transfer, and on some process stages (coal processing) the dust-air mixture is explosive. Such units use a covered tray (PEVU) with a sealed joint to the next conveyor or elevator — the criteria for choosing between an open and covered tray are covered in our separate article on open vs. covered tray design.
Temperature conditions
On stages after drying or roasting, material reaches the feeder hot — the standard PEV design is rated up to +200°C, but the actual temperature at a specific stage needs to be confirmed in advance: it determines the seal material and, in some cases, calls for a non-standard drive design.
Automation and dispatch integration
At large mining plants, feeders are usually integrated into the site's process control system — the control unit needs to support remote start/stop and status signaling to the dispatch point, not just local control. Automatic mode with a vibration sensor on the tray serves this loop in two ways at once: it stabilizes capacity and generates an alarm signal on deviation from normal.
